What Theme Did the Movie Marie Antoinette Fall Under?
Marie Antoinette was director Sofia Coppola’s third film. Critically applauded, some say that this film centered around the theme of the loneliness of being female, surrounded by a universe of people, those who know how to use and abuse you rather than to understand and value you. Coppola’s earlier films also seem to echo the same theme as she subtly succeeds to draw notes from the actresses who rarely seem to sound the subject.
Kristen Dunst, the lead actress is pitch-perfect in the title role of a 14 year old Austrian princess who is, to the audiences horror, purchased and imported to the French court to join Louis XVI, played by Jason Schwartzman to produce an heir. He himself is totally clueless of the happenings and the reason behind them all as is the princess. She is confident and graceful, has poise and high spirits but no way to self expression. She just keeps all this cocooned within herself, feeling lonely and worthless.
The picture formed, is not detailed with the actual politics of the period nor informative. This maybe because what we see is as a whole Marie Antoinette’s world through her perspective. The movie like all directed by Coppola use mostly locations t define the lives of its characters. This one has been shot in Versailles to show a single track society devoted to Marie Antoinette, taking care of her and feeding her a the beehive of the queen bee with the sole purpose of getting the king’s heir into the world. It is an eye opener film for many about the society that existed in the early period of history and helps us appreciate and analyze many of the things that happen even in the present times.
