Tom Hanks and Opie

Tom Hanks and Opie

Tom Hanks and Ron Howard have worked on several pictures together. My favorite is Apollo 13. I saw this action take place in real time and I looked forward to the fictionalized movie version.

That event in history had everyone on the edge of their seat and nobody knew the outcome.

The movie was a record of that event and everybody knew how things would turn out. Still, the action generated suspense that yielded a satisfying ending.

Now if anyone knows what that last sentence means, let me know.

Tom Hanks and Ron Howard are presently hitting the talk show circuit to promote their new movie based on the novel The Da Vinci Code. They talk more about each other than the movie which is supposed to be a block buster.

Hanks said that Ron always says the obvious during production. “Now remember, the computer is broken.”

Howard says that Hanks attempts to mimic him are pretty pathetic.

Ron Howard

Ron Howard, whom we all know from his television career, is an Oklahoma boy raised by a theatrical family. He grew up on television and movie sets. When he was 23, he started directing.

He said on the Leno show that he directed Betty Davis. When he was talking with her on the telephone he told her to call him Ron instead of Mr. Howard.

She said that he would be Mr. Howard until she decided whether she liked him or not.

After the first day of shooting, she patted him on the butt and said something like, “See you tomorrow, Ron.”

Well, maybe that was not exactly that what she said, but she did pat him on the Derrière and she called him Ron.

Ron has a fine family with his high school sweetheart. His children have not pursued acting careers.

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks is a California boy. His parents divorced when he was young and Tom went with his Father. His father was a cook who moved from job to job. Tom said that by the age of 10 he'd had "three mothers, five grammar schools and ten houses."

Hanks is a versatile actor playing poignant characters in Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump, Castaway, and The Road to Perdition, and in many other films.

The thing other than their inherent talents that makes Ron Howard and Tom Hanks different than some (but not all) other actors is their likeability and simplicity. They have a good sense of humor. They are the actor’s actors.
