Burton, Depp, and Atwood Together Again On Screen For Sweeney Todd
Fleet Street's new fashion guru isn't a stranger to the trade. Colleen Atwood, 2 time Academy Award winner, was pulled back into the ring for Tim Burton's new Sondheim adaptation to the silver screen. The film is called Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It's likely to be equal parts macabre, charming, humourous, entertaining, mysterious, just enough off the normalcy meter... well you've seen Tim Burton movies, so you surely get the idea.
Sweeney Todd is about an ordinary man gone mad at the loss of his family. In rage, he takes vengeance as his creed and a straight razor as his weapon. The Demon Barber of Fleet Street takes his victims lives with more than a shave and a haircut. Sinister, no?
Atwood's credits are almost as lengthy as Santa Claus' naughty or nice list, and for good reason. It's also clear that amongst her best work is a sizable force of Burton films that have received some universal acclaim. Burton clearly adores her work. Fans of the director's work can rest easy that it will be unique, but familiar in all the right areas. Her previous Tim Burton films include Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissor Hands, and my personal favorite, Big Fish.
With only trailers to predict the outlook of Atwood's success on the new film, it would be hard to determine if her current costume designs will live up to the hype. Hollywood has decided to admittedly stamp her work with it's seal of approval in the recent "Behind the Camera" awards. James Woods presented her with her honor while making a clever joke about making up his speech due to the writer's strike.
The film's star, Johnny Depp, will be playing one of his most unique roles as he takes on the singing of the musical as well. With all the right parts, the whole could be very intriguing. At least we know to expect quality from the costumes.
